Freestyle Full Contact Amateur Kickboxing Competition

Sunday 21st February, 2010

Bricket Wood Sports Centre, St Albans

On Sunday 21st February 2010 Shaolin Kickboxing Club staged its first major fight competition for 3 years. The idea was to showcase the young talent across the club and give Shaolin’s students, particularly its novice fighters, the opportunity to compete in the ring and put into practice the kickboxing they had been training in at the club’s venues in Edgware and Kenton in Middlesex and Elstree and St Albans in Hertfordshire. The only “outsider” was a fighter from Britannia Kickboxing Gym in Berkhampstead who competed at middleweight.

Fighting under freestyle full contact rules with safety modifications for juniors, 16 competitors entered in 5 age/weight divisions with the aim of becoming champions in their category.

The audience of approximately 200 people was treated to 9 excellent fights with all contestants demonstrating great heart and will to win. Click here for the results:

Commenting about the contest Shaolin’s Chief Instructor Kingsley Morgan said “I was very pleased with the boys. They all put in a terrific performance, although there are some important lessons for all of them which we will be going over in our classes. I’m pleased with the management of the event and the fact that we prevented any serious injuries from occurring. We hope to hold another competition in October.”
